On Friday 11 August 2023 at Canley Heights I had the honour of attending the commemorative reception organised by the veterans of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam to mark Vietnam Veterans Day. Vietnam Veterans Day is commemorated on 18 August every year. The day was originally known as Long Tan Day, chosen to commemorate the 108 Australian soldiers who fought one of the fiercest battles in the Vietnam War against possibly more than 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers in the Battle of Long Tan on 18 August 1966. In commemorating this year's Vietnam Veterans Day I honour and thank all those who served in the Vietnam War and the sacrifices of their families. Our veterans and their families have made our nation proud. I congratulate the committee, especially president Mr Huy Bach Phan and vice‑president Mr Xuan Lam for organising the event.
