On the 16th of August 2024, I had the pleasure of attending the Vietnam Veterans Day dinner at Crystal Palace Canley Heights. This event was to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966 and recognise those that served and sacrificed in the Vietnam War. More than 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam from 1962 to 1973. Tragically, 523 soldiers lost their lives and 3,000 were wounded in a valiant effort to prevent the spread of North Vietnam's Communist regime in South Vietnam. Many more soldiers were inflicted with psychological damage and trauma. These soldiers returned home to an unsympathetic country and did not receive respect and honour due to a growing anti-war movement. In 1987, Vietnam veterans received a parade in front of an audience of 100,000 Australians to honour their service and sacrifice. Many veterans continue their service to our nation through the military or in community activities. I would like to thank the almost 60,000 Australians that served in the Vietnam War, and to the Veterans of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam for the kind invitation.
