On 1 June 2024 I had the pleasure of attending the Traditional Day of the former Republic of Vietnam Official Organisation of NSW. This organisation played a pivotal role in maintaining public order and national security under the Republic of South Vietnam until the Fall of Saigon in 1975. Former police officers, their families, descendants, and the broader Vietnamese communities commemorate this day annually to honour and pay tribute to the servicemen and women, who dedicated their lives during the Vietnam War in protecting and defending freedom and democracy. This commemoration serves as a tradition to remember the history and contributions of the organisation to South Vietnam, reflecting their connection to the legacy of the past and their shared experiences as refugees. It is also an effort to preserve the community's heritage to pass on to younger generations. The event features a myriad of commemorative ceremonies and traditions, complemented by vibrant cultural performances, which embody a vivid tapestry of our diverse multiculturalism. I thank Mr Song Van Huynh and the former Republic of Vietnam Official Organisation for their kind invitation and commend their ongoing efforts in preserving their rich traditions.
