On 2 June 2024, I had the pleasure of attending the screening ofBoat People: A 50-year Journey at the Bryan Brown Theatre in Bankstown. Directed by Vietnamese Canadian filmmaker Ms Thanh Tam, the documentary commemorates the 50-year journey of millions of Vietnamese who fled their homeland by boat in search of freedom after the fall of Saigon in 1975. Through intimate interviews and raw footage, the film reveals the emotional toll of separation, the struggle for survival and the enduring hope for a new and liberated life. As director Thanh Tam poignantly notes, "Fifty years is a short period in the history of a nation, yet long for a lifetime." The film honours this milestone while inviting the younger and future generations to cherish the legacy of their predecessors. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to director Thanh Tam for the film's success and commend the efforts of everyone involved in this significant and very valuable work.
