I had the privilege of attending the commemoration of Vietnam Veterans' Day, also known as Long Tan Day, on 18 August 2025. This annual observance marks the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. On this day in 1966 in the Long Tan rubber plantation Australian soldiers engaged in one of their most challenging battles of the Vietnam War. Each year we come together to reflect on the bravery, camaraderie and duty displayed by Australians during their service. We honour those who lost their lives, those who returned home carrying physical or emotional wounds, and the enduring impact of service on veterans' families. We also pay tribute to the nearly 60,000 Australians who served during our 10-year involvement in the Vietnam War, from 1962 to 1972. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Veterans of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam and the Canley Heights RSL Sub-Branch for their kind invitation and devoted services to our veterans.
